This song, “Better Git it in Your Soul,” opens bassist Charles Mingus’ 1959 album Mingus Ah Um. This song has fascinated people with its exploration of the intersection between gospel and jazz. Tom Moon on NPR says Mingus’ “approach to gospel has inspired generations of jazz musicians.”
In addition to performing with Jazz greats like Art Tatum, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker, Mingus is known for founding the “Jazz Workshop” to show case the work of emerging musicians and for recording over a hundred albums.
