Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers–MOANIN’

Art Blakey (1919-1990) was a popular jazz drummer and band leader. New Grove Dictionary of Jazz notes that Blakely was leading a commercial band by the 7th grade. In 1947 he organized an octet called the Jazz Messengers with whom he would record regularly (members of the octet coming and going) throughout his career. This 1958 hard bop album is one such collaboration. The entire album can be heard here.
